Context & Environment

Geophysical monitoring is an important part of reservoir management, for oil and gas optimal production and for CO2 storage as well. IN most of cases, the production can be managed according to the assumption of limited interaction between fluid and reservoir rock. The limitation is often the interaction influencing the mobility and therefore the flow regime.

However, some recent studies, in-house but also reported in scientific publications, demonstrated the possible more complex effect of rock fluid interaction, sometimes with benefits (more porosity, more permeability), sometimes with a drop of efficiency, even total loss of flow capacity.

Activiteiten

The subject of this internship will be to work on the multi-parameter geophysical effects associated with carbonate reservoir complexities, karst, fracturation, dissolution, and deposition.

This will include the following topics:

Work on 4D (time-lapse) geophysical monitoring in carbonate domain, mostly seismic datasets.

Integration and sensitivity of karst and fracturation relationships included in petro-elastic model code (PEM). This implies a specific coding of different perturbations with appropriate description parameters, in relation with reservoir model content.

Apply CaliPEM process in carbonate context.

Look for Rock Fluid Interaction (RFI) references; identify constitutive equations for rock evolution. Explore ETLP deliverable and applicability in our workflow.

Check laboratory and petrophysical entities consistency of RFI modeling.

    Address RFI sensitivity for:

o    3D seismic imagining (nature of signal)

o    4D seismic monitoring: evolution of 4D attribute, velocity and density (applicability in gravimetry).

Database for the study (potential for application):

o    Asab 4D field pilot,

o    BuHasa 4D field pilot,

o    Moho Albian 4D monitoring surveys

o    Dan-Halfdan 4D monitoring surveys

New acquisition if any during the internship

    Al-Abouf carbonate model

The study will be based on:

Bibliography; starting from an existing database, then updating with recent and relevant papers. Extract alternative methodologies, formulas and considerations. This includes a specific scouting of Petrobras publications concerning presalt carbonates; already some papers identified.

Karst reference: P. Debec and al. 2025

    Fracturation reference: A. Windenberger 2024

RFI: Petrobras publications, ETLP, in-house cases (R. Petton)

Diagenesis phenomenon understanding and modeling (A. Virgone, H. Pourpak, P. Debec)

Tech Days presentation A. Virgone et al. 2025.

Most of the work will be conducted using the Sismage software and database.

Testing of new ideas can be done with Sismage, Python or Matlab coding.

Results of the internship will be included in a conference presentation (EAGE 2026 Aberdeen or further opportunities), as a partial contribution (with DOI). Depending the impact, it can also provide the material for a publication.
