Context & Environment

Over the past decade, photovoltaic (PV) energy systems have grown rapidly worldwide, driven by falling costs, incentive policies, and increasing demand for clean energy. This expansion of the PV market has led to a significant rise in the number and size of PV installations, as well as associated investments and risk-return dynamics. With the growing integration of PV systems into the power grid, attention to their reliability and lifespan has intensified.

Inverters are frequently identified as a failure point in PV systems and represent a critical factor in installation malfunctions. Inverter failure costs account for more than half of the total expenses of a photovoltaic system. It is therefore essential to predict the lifespan of PV inverters to reduce operating costs and develop effective maintenance strategies.

The performance of a photovoltaic inverter depends on numerous factors such as operating conditions, application, and maintenance activities, making reliability assessment complex.

This internship will focus on a data-driven approach to build inverter reliability models and develop maintenance strategies for TotalEnergies’ photovoltaic sites. The intern will collect information on inverters and create a database including failure and replacement dates. In a second phase, the goal will be to fit a lifetime model based on the available data, using, for example, a non-parametric model such as the Kaplan-Meier estimator or a simple parametric model like the Weibull distribution. Finally, the maintenance strategy will be optimized based on preventive replacement costs, unexpected failure costs, and the current age of the equipment.

Activiteiten

As an intern in Photovoltaic Inverter Reliability Assessment (M/F), your missions will include:

  • Collecting internal inverter failure data
  • Fitting a lifetime model (including stochastic options)
  • Formulating several strategies based on the lifetime model aimed at reducing annual costs

You will work within a team of experienced professionals and alongside a mentor-coach, your future career reference. Personalized guidance will help you develop autonomy and successfully achieve your degree!

Profiel kandidaat

Currently enrolled in an engineering school or a Master’s program in the field of R&D, you are looking for a 6-month end-of-study internship starting in March 2026?

During your engineering studies, have you developed knowledge in applied mathematics and statistics? Do you have skills in modeling and optimization? Are you familiar with machine learning? Are you interested in the solar energy sector?

You are comfortable with office tools and know the Microsoft Office suite? You will mainly use Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Knowledge of Python programming (Numpy) and some experience with CI/CD would be a plus.

Autonomy, rigor, and team spirit are part of your strengths? Do you know how to take initiative?

Strong writing skills and a professional command of English are essential for this position. French will be a plus.
