Context & Environment

The role is part of a fast-growing renewable energy platform within an international energy company aiming to significantly expand its installed capacity globally. The division is responsible for the full value chain of renewable projects, including development, financing, construction, operations, and asset management across solar, wind, and energy storage. 

Malaysia represents a priority growth market in Southeast Asia, with increasing opportunities driven by energy transition policies, corporate demand for green power, and evolving regulatory frameworks. The environment is dynamic, requiring close monitoring of market developments, competitive positioning, and government policies

Activiteiten

Drive the identification, origination, and maturation of renewable energy opportunities in Malaysia, supporting their progression from early-stage development through internal approvals up to Notice to Proceed (NTP)

This role is responsible for originating, developing, and maturing a pipeline of renewable energy opportunities in Malaysia, including greenfield projects, tenders, partnerships, and acquisitions, while supporting their progression through internal governance stages. The role interfaces extensively with both external stakeholders (partners, authorities, utilities) and internal cross-functional teams (development, finance, legal, technical), contributing directly to pipeline growth, deal execution, and strategic positioning in the Malaysian market.


1. Opportunity Origination & Pipeline Development

  • Identify, screen, and develop renewable energy opportunities (solar, storage, hybrid solutions) across Malaysia
  • Build and maintain a robust pipeline including greenfield projects, tenders, partnerships, and acquisitions 
  • Contribute to country strategy and pipeline prioritization aligned with global targets

2. Stakeholder & Partnership Management

  • Develop strong relationships with key stakeholders: local developers, landowners, utilities, partners, regulators, advisors
  • Represent the company in external engagements and strengthen market positioning 

3. Commercial Structuring & Deal Execution

  • Lead commercial negotiation and structuring of: 
    • Joint ventures and partnerships with developers or landowners
    • Development agreements
    • Tender submissions and acquisitions
  • Work closely with legal, finance, technical, and project teams to ensure bankable deal structures

4. Cross-functional Project Advancement

  • Coordinate with internal teams (development, engineering, financing) to advance projects through stage gates
  • Support project development activities including discussions and agreements on permitting, offtake, EPC, lenders, concession, and regulatory engagement
  • Ensure alignment with internal governance processes and timelines

5. Market Intelligence & Strategy

  • Monitor regulatory developments, competitive landscape, and policy evolution in Malaysia
  • Provide insights to refine business strategy and identify new growth areas 

6. Reporting & Business Case Development

  • Manage the full investment lifecycle from origination through development, structuring, due diligence, financing, execution, and financial close
  • Coordinate technical, legal, tax, commercial, and financial due diligence processes alongside external advisors
  • Prepare investment cases, presentations, and approval materials for internal decision-making
  • Build and maintain detailed financial models, investment cases, valuation analysis, and transaction materials for internal investment committees and external stakeholders[IL1] 
  • Track pipeline performance and ensure timely reporting to regional leadership

Profiel kandidaat

The incumbent is expected to have a range of competencies and experience including:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, Finance or a related discipline
  • 8 to 12 years of experience in business development, project development, commercial or related roles, preferably in renewables, power, infrastructure or energy. Proven experience in deal origination and stakeholder management
  • Good understanding of the Malaysian renewable energy landscape, including market dynamics, stakeholders and regulatory environment
  • Strong commercial acumen, stakeholder management and negotiation skills
  • Experience with tenders, partnerships, and/or M&A in energy sector
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and manage multiple opportunities simultaneously
  • Fluent in English, Malay or other regional languages is a plus
