Context & Environment

To meet the challenges and ambitions of TotalEnergies, the R&D Hybrid and Storage proposes solutions to optimize sizing and operation of energy systems coupling several energy sources, often intermittent, for several applications, and evaluating key performance indicators during the sizing phase and to prepare the commissioning phase of such project. With increasing complexity of new energy systems and diversity of technologies, the OptimHYSe project aims to build a library of models for these technologies, with further analysis of their design and operation.

Activities

The objective of the internship is to optimize the operation of hybrid energy systems for green hydrogen production, focusing on load sharing of multiple electrolysers under intermittent energy supply. The activities will cover the identification and modelling of various operating philosophies for multi-module and multi-electrolyser, analyze their impact on degradation, and contribute to the definition of repowering strategies.

The existing model framework provides a solid foundation for this project, with different models and system architectures developed to study hybrid energy systems. The focus will be on operating philosophies of electrolysers, particularly how load sharing among multiple units can be optimized to handle intermittent energy profiles and minimize degradation. The reference capacity for these electrolyser projects is at large megawatt scales, emphasizing the need for efficient and scalable solutions.

Main activities:

  • Conduct a comprehensive review of existing research on energy systems, with a focus on electrolyser degradation and load sharing strategies
  • Utilize the existing framework to simulate different operating philosophies for load sharing among multiple stacks of a single electrolyser (and potentially among multiple electrolysers), under different business cases of interest and different operating conditions
  • Analyze the impact of each operating philosophy on the degradation of electrolysers
  • Contribute to the definition of potential repowering strategies for each module within the hybrid energy system
  • Assess the feasibility and effectiveness of proposed strategies in extending the lifespan and efficiency of the system
  • Document all findings in a comprehensive report and prepare presentations for progress and final outcomes

The intern will interact with multiple teams involved in the topics of optimization for hydrogen systems (team in charge of R&D activities on electrolyser technologies, Technical Lines and Customer Lines).

You will join the R&D team based on the Paris-Saclay Campus in the NEXT building. To strengthen the on-site team, TotalEnergies is looking for young talents who will bring new ideas and respond to R&D challenges.

You will evolve within a team of experienced professionals and with a tutor-coach, the reference for your future profession. Individualized support will help you develop your autonomy and lead you to your diploma!

Candidate Profile

Currently enrolled in an engineering school or Master's program in the Computer and energy Science field, are you looking for an 6-month end-of-study internship starting in March 2025?

Do you have knowledge in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Energy Systems, or a related field and understanding of renewable hybrid energy systems and electrolyser technology.

Are you comfortable with office automation and familiar with the Office suite? You'll be using Excel. Do you know optimization technique (e.g., MILP, MINLP, Heurstic, algoritme genetique, ...)? Are you proficiency in Python (package pyomo) for modeling and simulation, data analysis tools, and statistical software? First manipulaition of simulation (Matlab Simulink, Amesim, Aspen, ProII,...) will be a plus.

Are you a self-starter, rigorous and a team player? Can you take the initiative?

So don't wait any longer, apply to join our team!
