Context & Environment

Seismic imaging and inversion is the only technology we have to "see" beneath the surface of the solid earth with the resolution needed to identify exploration targets and position exploration wells, appraise and characterize discoveries and monitor reservoirs during production to optimize development and infill drilling programs. It is equally applicable to defining and monitoring CO2 storage projects and for other “new energy” requirements such as shallow hazard characterization for offshore wind farms.

The team of which this position is part aims to produce innovations in imaging or inversion which can impact any or all of these activities by extracting more or better information from the data or by reducing the turnaround time of studies and to adapt or extend our algorithms and codes for new types of data as acquisition technology evolves.

You will be working as part of the Advanced Seismic Imaging (ASI) team of the Subsurface Imaging (SIMA) Research program.

Activities

You will conduct R&D in the domain of geophysical imaging and inversion, leading one or more projects or actions. This will involve some or all of:

  • Conceiving new algorithms and implement and test them as software tools within the company's imaging framework for application to the company's geophysical data in production
  • Following up external R&D which is sponsored/financed by the project - attend project meetings, transfer and test technology and adapt for our framework
  • Maintaining awareness of technology advances across the industry - read industry publications, attend presentations, etc.
  • Communicating and collaborating with colleagues in the ASI theme, across the SIMA programme and imaging team in TL.
  • Participate in definition of intern subjects, recruitment and supervision of interns.
  • Present projects and results internally to operational colleagues and management, and externally in conferences, workshops and partner meetings
  • Write documentation and papers/conference abstracts.
  • Current projects include : adapting our imaging and inversion codes for DAS data (from optical fibre), exploring new methods of quantifying uncertainties, and investigating the potential of Machine Learning for enhancing and accelerating our tools and workflows.

Candidate Profile

  • You have a Ph.D. in geophysical imaging or inversion, physics, numerical methods or image processing, and ideally 15 years of experience in the field.
  • Mastery of programming in Fortran or C and Python, based on regular practice,
  • Good understanding of inverse theory and Bayesian inversion,
  • Knowledge of wave propagation and numerical simulation of partial differential equations,
  • Fluency in either English or French, and good knowledge of the other.
  • You enjoy problem solving and have experience of working both in small teams or alone.
  • Your additional skills in HPC, Machine Learning or other programming languages, and experience of seismic imaging and inversion with real data would be an advantage.
