Activities

Activities:

  • Daily Monitoring- (Ensure compliance with Environmental permits, ensure reliable operation and on-spec product, and search for problems that could prevent the ability to maintain capacity). Support environmental department (emissions calculations)
  • Troubleshooting- (pressure surveys, temperature surveys, identifying and correcting potential problems, determining need and frequency of exchanger cleaning and means of cleaning (during shut down or partial shutdown), economic impact of these shutdowns and technical support for operating conditions during partial shutdown)
  • Engineering calculations- (Size orifice plates, size control valves, size relief valves, size restriction orifices, calculate pressure drops, size piping for small projects, perform heat/material balances, size/rate heat exchangers, calculate fluid properties, determine system volumes/residence times)
  • Mass/volume balance- (Update spreadsheet for material balances, ensure orifice calculations reflect current operating conditions and are otherwise correct, calibrate or rearrange meters if necessary, and provide recommendations to correct mass/volume balance discrepancies.)
  • Make recommendations to Operations on following safe work practices while maintaining quality, complying with environmental permits, ensuring reliable operation, making on-spec product, maintaining capacity, and increasing profitability.
  • Support turnaround/maintenance activities such as: Catalyst unloading/loading supervision, chemical cleaning supervision, vessel inspection, shutdown/startup coverage, including revision/development of operating procedures, sample procurement, and recommendations for maintenance (exchanger cleaning, screen cleaning, etc.)
  • Additional Responsibilities: Evaluate economics to determine profitable modes of unit operation, Lead/participate in Process Hazards Analyses, Define and execute small (non-capital) projects, Assist groups with capital project design and installation
  • Monitor unit catalyst performance and issue catalyst life projections; Evaluate new proposed catalyst systems; recommend and initiate procurement process for new catalyst
  • Maintain working material balances for delegated operating units
  •  Ensure that refinery quality and safety initiatives are carried out in daily activities

Candidate Profile

Requirements: Bachelor of Science, Chemical Engineering and 0-3 years’ experience preferably in petroleum refining as a process technical service, or design engineer (under 1 year requires 2 internships).

Chemical Engineering knowledge: heat transfer, mass transfer, fluid operations, heat/material balances, chemistry, physics, economic fundamentals. Basic chemical engineering fundamentals

Computer knowledge: use of spreadsheets (i.e. Excel), DCS control data historians (i.e. PI Process book), process simulation software (i.e. Pro2 Hysim) helpful, and be able to understand new systems as they come (i.e. SAP)
