  • Renewable electricity is the energy of the 21st century. To answer responsibly, TotalEnergies is investing massively in solar and wind power plants and battery energy storage assets to become one of the global top five producers of renewable energy by 2030.
  • US electricity markets are among the key priorities of the Company and of its Gas, Renewable and Power (GRP) branch correlating with its very well-developed gas and other commodities businesses. Their heterogeneity and complexities require an intimate knowledge of the US Power markets but also an excellent understanding of risk, position management, and compliance.
  • TotalEnergies Gas and Power North America (TGPNA) is TotalEnergies’ US trading affiliate, operating within the GRP organization, and engaged in marketing and trading, transportation, storage, export, and other commercial activities to support the Company’s US energy portfolio.  The portfolio primarily includes Natural gas and Natural Gas Liquids, Power, and Environmental Products, which are all crucial to TotalEnergies’ global integrated strategy
  • The US Trading Origination Team is part of the Trading Energy Management (TEM) business unit and operates within the fast-evolving and competitive US energy markets.  The US Trading Origination Team is core to facilitating the development and execution of the TEM strategy in the US and helping achieve TTE’s strategy to be a multi-energy company prioritizing energies of the future.

Activities

Activities

Develop a deep understanding of TotalEnergies Gas & Power North America (“TGPNA”) trading portfolio, including:

  • Asset portfolios, contractual arrangements, and product flows, with a focus on power projects and future developments
  • Key counterparties, markets, and market dynamics
  • Positions, risk management, and optimization strategies
  • Company strategies for business development, growth, and new energies

Work with Head of Power Origination to originate, pursue, and execute a variety of Power transactions and deals that complement the Power growth strategy:

  • Focus on identifying potential transactions with renewable developers, generation owners and storage developers to develop, negotiate, and close supply deals that meet the companies strategic supply targets.
  • Work with load serving entities, commercial customers and industrial customers to develop energy and risk products to help manage the customers energy needs and renewable requirements.
  • Work with other members of the Origination Team to analyze revenue/profit potential of structured transactions
  • Identify products/deal structures that will help optimize opportunities around existing power assets /portfolio and market those products/deal structures to internal and external customers

Directly Influence and Support Power Origination Portfolio and Performance:

  • Track customers, sales opportunities, and develop market intelligence to build the Origination Team’s overall market knowledge and expertise
  • Help develop, test, and maintain trading tools and models to support counterparty deals, structured transactions, and long-term deal analysis
  • Initiate actions to design and develop customized power product offerings to address internal portfolio needs and for certain external customers

Manage internal and external customer relationships:

  • Maintain good working relationships with internal risk control, finance, HR, compliance and legal groups
  • Represent TotalEnergies at conferences and marketing events to help establish TotalEnergies as a market leader in the US Power industry

Work closely and Coordinate with TGPNA and GRP (Europe) front office and support desks to:

  • Identify risks and opportunities in the portfolio
  • Improve coordination, share tools, and exchange on best practices
  • Support efforts to streamline and optimize work flows


Dimensions

The Power Originator is responsible for supporting the Power Trading Origination Strategy in the US, by identifying, developing, and closing short and long-term power transactions with various levels of complexity.  Specifically, the Power Originator will focus on transactions for the purchase and sale of energy, capacity and renewable products and services, with an emphasis on customized products for internal and external customers.


Additionally, the Power Originator will help procure and negotiate contracts for Flexible assets (i.e., Batteries, CCGTs, Demand/Response) as needed to help balance power portfolio exposures. The role will require developing a deep understanding of the Company’s broader US Energy Strategy in order to help develop and implement a portfolio of products and services dedicated to meeting the companies strategy. The candidate will be responsible for working with IPPs/ Renewable Energy Producers, Energy Funds, Load Serving Entities, Generation Developers and Industrial & Commercial customers to help implement this strategy. 


Geographical coverage will be within the core region(s) in which the Company operates. The Power Originator will directly face both internal and external counterparts and stakeholders, with the primary responsibility of managing these relationships from inception through contract completion and beyond.  The Power Originator must also be able to communicate and coordinate internally with multiple trading desks and all functions, such as credit, finance, legal and management (both locally and globally) in order to bring deals from inception to completion. 


Purposes:

  • Comply with the Code of Conduct, Compliance Manual and all policies and procedures of the Company and the Group
  • Project and Deal Origination: identify, evaluate, structure, negotiate, and execute a variety of power related transactions
  • Manage and develop relationships with internal and external counterparts and stakeholders, focusing on growing the portfolio of power customers
  • Propose profitable or cost savings transactions to optimize the assets portfolio and create value for the group
  • Interface with various desks to ensure best practices are maintained
  • Coordinate with front office and all relevant support functions to ensure smooth implementation and operation of contracts originated by the Power Origination desk
  • Maintain a good and up to date knowledge of financial market regulations in the markets we operate

Candidate Profile

Are you someone with the following:

  • Undergraduate degree in economics, finance, business administration, or equivalent
  • Minimum of 7 years work experience, with at least 5 years previous experience working in a commercial function in an energy commodity environment
  • Experience in trading, marketing, operations, and risk management of wholesale electricity
  • Knowledge of the US electricity market with a focus on ERCOT, PJM, and/or CAISO
  • Strong Sales Skills and demonstrated previous experience to develop and grow relationships with Power market counterparties
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Creative and highly proactive, with capacity to work and deliver results independently
  • High level of analytical and organizational skills
  • Proficient in Excel, PowerPoint, PowerBI
  • Excellent oral and writing communication and presentation skills
  • Proficiency in Spanish or French is a plus
